Chachrit is located in Uttarakhand, a state in the Indian Himalayas dominated by pine forests. This reportage was produced in 2012 for GIZ to support the qualitative analysis carried out to identify unserved energy demands and potentials for improving local livelihoods through energy access. Although the village was connected to the grid, it suffered from frequent load shedding and unreliable energy supply. GIZ together with AVANI (a local NGO), designed and developed a 9kW gasifier plant to generate electricity by harnessing the energy of pine needles and use the residue as fuel briquettes for cooking purposes.
